Skin. The largest organ of our body and most of the time, its importance does not match up to its priority. Granted that skincare routines are taking on a more vital role in the lives of people but are they getting its due credit?

Skincare, most time, is looked upon as more of a beauty routine, as part of the aesthetics of a “perfect body” rather than a health concern. Again, this does not apply to every single person but a lot of times, that is the harsh truth. Dental health, cardiovascular performance, and general wellbeing all place higher than skincare when it comes to precedence.

Today, we know that the skin is our first line of defence against the environment. Thus, it requires a lot more attention to maintain and rejuvenate it. This is where antioxidants come into play. One may ask,

“What are antioxidants?”

Antioxidants are basically sponges that absorb volatile, poisonous molecules in our cells called free radicals. These molecules are consistently present and accumulate in our body as a by-product of daily cellular activity or produced as a result of exposure to environmental factors such as sunlight and chemicals from pollution1.

Left unchecked, these radicals pose a number of health disorders such as skin damage, sunburns, premature skin ageing, skin cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Thus, a daily supply of antioxidants as part of your skincare routine will help combat free radical damage.
